Better Surgical Outcomes

Thanks to our wonderful supporters and a grant awarded by the Morrisons Foundation, we raised more than £220,000 to fund a brand new, state-of-the-art surgical microscope.

The microscope helps surgeons like Mr Craig Russell, when they are performing complex plastic and reconstructive surgery on thousands of children each year.

Craig Russell Microscope - GCHCThanks to the power of the new microscope, Mr Russell and his team are able to see in detail the blood flow in even the tiniest of veins.

This will improve the outcome of surgery and minimise the need for further operations for many children who are treated for facial reconstruction, cleft surgery, tumour removal and lower limb reconstruction.

Children like Lewis, who required a lower leg amputation following a quad bike accident.

“The new surgical microscope would have greatly helped Lewis. While the operation was a success, he had to have extra operations to revise the reconstruction. Lewis and his family would have had a much less traumatic treatment course had, on the night of the injury, we had access to this equipment”.

Lewis - Mr Russell

Lewis has been an absolute megastar and has never once complained about losing his leg. He has charged on regardless and sees everything as a challenge.
