Christmas at the Children's Hospital

23 December 2022 cover xmas

It's Christmas at the children's hospital!

Spending time in hospital over Christmas is a difficult reality for many families, but with your support, we work hard every year to create magical memories for them.

Here is a round up of some of the fun and festive activities that we've organised in the lead up to Christmas.

Decorating Day

At the end of November we were delighted to be joined by volunteers from the Rangers Charity Foundation and Rangers Academy players in decorating the hospital for Christmas!

The Hospital Atrium was also made Christmas ready with the annual giant Christmas Tree.

Thank you to our kind sponsors Enviraz for supplying our tree again this year.

Christmas Light Switch On

On the first of December, a crowd of patients came down from the wards with their families to watch the Christmas tree lights get switched in the atrium.

It was wonderful to see so many of our hospital family come together to help light up the children's hospital.

6-year-old patient Jack was chosen to switch the lights on this year.

Jack turned six at the start of November, and is living with heart failure. He’s been on the waiting list for a heart transplant since August 2020, and regularly attends the children’s hospital in Glasgow.

Jack has also helped with our Christmas Appeal this year by designing our 2022 Charity Christmas Bauble, The Wee Snowman with the Big Heart.

Our Hospital Nativity

Our young patients have been getting creative and have made their very own Nativity Scene with the help of the hospital Play Team! Pop down to the Hospital Atrium to take a look.

Virtual Calls from Santa

Santa took cold calling to a new level this Christmas as he video called our young patients all the way from the North Pole!

As well as meeting Santa, every child also received a special Christmas present from Mrs Claus.

A huge thank you to our kind supporter Cisco for sponsoring this event again this year in the hospital MediCinema.

Santa Abseil

It may be cold outside, but that didn't stop Santa's annual abseil down the children's hospital!

Many staff and patients were thrilled to watch the exciting arrival from outside, and for who were unable to leave the wards the event was live streamed to bedside iPads.

Thank you to Balmore Group Scotland and everyone else who supported this exciting event.

Scottish Ballet Visit

Our friends from Scottish Ballet continued the festive celebrations at hospital by paying our young patients a magical visit.

The Snow Queen, a production based on the same fairytale as the Frozen film, is nearing the end of a 40-show run, but some of the ballerinas still found the time to pop in.

The highlight of the visit was when they practiced their pirouettes with patients from Schiehallion Ward.

Santa Visits the Hospital

With only a few sleeps left before Christmas, Santa paid a very special visit to the hospital this week.

santa visit 2It's the first time since 2019 that Santa has been able to visit in person so it was very magical to have him back at the hospital!

Thank you to all of our special visitors and kind supporters who have helped us bring the magic of Christmas to the children's hospital again this year.
