For My Best Friend

14 June 2022 Mia and Kurt after her run

Fundraising superstar Mia has raised over £850 for the Schiehallion Ward at the Royal Hospital for Children – all for her best friend Kurt.

Eight-year-old Mia, of Campbeltown, Argyll, was moved to raise money for Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity for the team that cared for her pal when he had Cancer five years ago.

The pair have known each other since Mia was born, and Kurt’s mum Jo is her godmother.

After Mia raised such an amazing amount from her fun run, Jo said:

“Thank you, Mia — you’re amazing as always. We love you lots.”

Donations are still pouring in after Mia’s efforts last month, and she’s buzzing to do a cheque presentation with Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity in July.

Recently Kurt had to go down to Newcastle for a stem cell transplant before returning to Glasgow.

Mia’s Mum Nicola said:

“I remember when we visited him the first time at Schiehallion. The staff were first class, so Mia has tried to do this specifically for the Schiehallion Ward.

Mia dressed up for her fun run“Kurt was in Glasgow for a couple of months and because of the nature of his illness, he wasn’t allowed out of his room.

“The mix of Covid restrictions and his transplant meant that he couldn’t see anyone but we dropped off supplies at his door.

“He had to get things brought in and Glasgow Children's Hospital Charity was really helpful in keeping him entertained.”

With many children in Schiehallion immunosuppressed and room-bound, toys and games from outside are limited in the ward.

That's where the Play Team, supported by Glasgow Children's Hospital Charity, come in.

The Charity and the Play Team are amazing in what they provide for the kids. A hospital stay is always made brighter and more fun with the help of the amazing nurses and Play Team,” Jo added.

Mia said:

“He’s my friend and people have been taking care of him for quite a long time, that’s why I wanted to raise money.”
