Darcie's Story, as told by her mum, Emma
Being told your child has cancer is one of the most devastating things a parent can hear.
When our daughter Darcie was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, a rare and aggressive bone cancer, it felt like winning the worst lottery in the world. You never think it will happen to your family, until it does.
Darcie was ten, full of energy and laughter, when a fall during gymnastics led to an x-ray. We expected a broken arm. Instead, we were thrown into a whirlwind of tests, treatments and fear.
That fall meant her cancer was caught early, but the year that followed was filled with chemotherapy, surgery, and pain. Through it all, Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity was by our side.
They didn’t just support Darcie’s treatment, they supported her childhood. Character visits, crafts, games and little moments of joy reminded her she was still a child, not just a patient.
Our family mantra became “Brave, Positive, Strong”, and Darcie has lived those words every day. She’s even made wristbands with her mantra on it and raised £35,000 to give back and support others.
Thanks to the hospital team and supporters like you, we’re slowly getting our bright, happy girl back.
Thank you,
Emma
