The Impact of Gaming: Caleb's Story

Last May, Caleb was admitted to Ward 1E in preparation for replacement heart valve surgery. He had his surgery on the 28th of June, spent a further 49 days in PICU recovering, before moving back to 1E.

During this tricky time for Caleb, spent away from friends and home comforts, he was able to regain some normality and joy, thanks to our gaming service. Caleb’s Mum, Tina, shares:

“We first heard about the gaming service through Jackie – a wonderful member of the Play Team in Ward 1E. Gaming is such a huge part of Caleb’s life, she just had to put us in touch with Steven! When Steven arrived to game with Caleb, it really lifted his spirits."

"It was amazing for him to get to spend 1 on 1 time with someone that loved gaming as much as he did.”

The gaming service that supported Caleb during his stay in the children's hospital is only possible thanks to the support of Child's Play.

The family also stayed with us in Crossbasket House for the three months that Caleb was in hospital. Tina adds:

“We live in Kilmarnock, which is around a 45-minute drive from the hospital - not too far, but it's far enough when going through such a horrible experience with your child. We were so grateful for the House, as it allowed us to be together with our two daughters without separating for long spells."
