Nektarios' Story
Throughout the last 25 years, Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity has provided vital care and support for families with children in hospital.
Hear about 27-year-old Nektarios’ story when he was a patient receiving specialist care at Yorkhill Hospital.
Nektarios’ Hospital Journey
Nektarios was born in 1998, at Makarios Paediatric Hospital in Cyprus, where he was diagnosed with Posterior Urethral Valves (PUV). In July 1998, he was transferred to Yorkhill Hospital, where he received emergency surgery and specialist care.
Nektarios’ family were kindly offered accommodation at Crossbasket House whilst he spent some time in the Renal Ward, and later again when undergoing his kidney transplant in 2003.
Andri, Nektarios’ Mum, shares:
“Diane, one of the Senior Charge Nurses, was incredible. All the staff were so kind; their dedication, care and kindness were invaluable.
“When Nektarios had a nasogastric tube to help him receive his medication and nutrition, the staff provided valuable advice on the meticulous care required, so that we could learn to change it ourselves at home.
“The staff were always there for us, answering any questions we had and helping to ease our worry during such a difficult time.
“They went above and beyond and we will always be grateful for their support.”
Nektarios is now 27 years old and continues to have regular check-ups but is doing very well. His Mum was delighted to share that Nektarios has graduated from University in Newcastle and is now a successful accountant.
How Glasgow Children’s Hospital Helped
Throughout Nektarios’ hospital journey, Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity was able to provide special moments of happiness for him and his family through entertainment, visits and comforting environments.
“We were so grateful for the distractions for Nektarios and his little sister Marilena. The entertainment visits were a joyful and welcomed distraction to help them cope with the emotional toll while Nektarios was in hospital.
“Yorkhill’s wards were so colourful, creating a friendly and cheerful environment to help ease the worry for our little ones.”
