Neonatal Lung Ultrasound and POCUS for Umbilical Lines
- Date and time: 25th January 2027 08:30-17:00
- Venue: Golden Jubilee Conference Hotel, Beardmore Street, Glasgow, G81 4SA
This one day course is aimed at neonatal clinicians looking to enhance their understanding, confidence and practical skills in neonatal lung ultrasound and ultrasound to guide and confirm umbilical arterial and venous catheter placement.
The programme will combine interactive teaching, hands-on workshops and case-based discussions, providing the participants with the opportunity to explore the clinical role of lung ultrasound and umbilical line POCUS, and its application in everyday neonatal practice.
Key topics will include:
- Ultrasound settings, probes and scanning techniques
- Lung ultrasound scoring and surfactant administration
- Differentiating RDS and TTN using lung ultrasound
- Diagnosis of pneumothorax, pleural effusion and other common lung pathologies
- Clinical application of lung ultrasound scores in neonatal practice
- Identification of relevant vascular structures
- Ultrasound-guided assessment and confirmation of umbilical arterial and venous catheter tip position
- Recognition of normal and abnormal catheter positioning
Practical workshops will provide hand-on experience in:
- Normal lung ultrasound and RDS scoring
- Recognition of common lung pathologies (consolidation; pneumothorax; effusion; TTN)
- Identifying key anatomical landmarks for UAC and UVC assessment, performing assessment of catheter position, and identifying common malpositions
- Scanning with volunteers and simulators
- Case discussions, video interpretation
