Brave, Positive & Strong: Darcie's Story
Hear how Darcie, aged 10, has raised an outstanding amount of money for Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity. She achieved this through the sale of wristbands, all whilst beginning treatment for bone cancer at the Royal Hospital for Children, Glasgow.
Darcie’s Hospital Journey
On July 21st, 10-year-old Darcie fractured her arm during her weekly gymnastics class, prompting a visit to hospital and a routine X-Ray. Unfortunately, the results showed some abnormalities, and has led to Darcie and her family’s lives being turned upside down. Following an upsetting and intense few weeks filled with scans and a biopsy, Darcie was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer.
Thankfully, after a call on Darcie’s 10th Birthday, the family were told the cancer hadn’t spread, and that a treatment plan would be put in place for the following few months.
“This was the first positive news we had received for some time, and it felt like a huge weight had been lifted.”

Darcie began her treatment on Monday, 19th August.
How Darcie Has Benefitted from your Donations
Darcie’s Dad, Robbie, has shared how Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity have helped not only Darcie these past few weeks, but her family as a whole,
“We have all been blown away by the people who work there. Every single person has helped us in some way and we can only imagine the amount of families they are supporting. This extends beyond Darcie's mum and I, in that her brothers, Dexter and Blake, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends and so many others are touched by the support and care Darcie is receiving.
Darcie has had various visitors in the ward from Harry Potter, to a storyteller, to the Play Team with their arts & crafts. She has also used the playroom within the hospital. Unfortunately, or fortunately, as this is likely to be a long road, she will continue to no doubt benefit from these charity-funded services over the next year.”
Darcie Gives Back
Despite going through such a tumultuous time, Darcie has been determined to stay optimistic and carry on living her life as normally as possible. During the past month, Darcie has come up with a family mantra:
“Brave Positive Strong”
The inspirational 10-year-old has been able to negotiate with local suppliers who have agreed to print this mantra onto rubber wristbands, which Darcie is selling for a recommended donation of £3. This simple idea has led to a staggering amount of support and donations since the fundraiser was set up on Friday, August 30th. Within the first 24 hours, the fundraising page received a whopping £6,000 worth of donations!
“Such has been the success for Darcie, that she ran out of some of the bands and a second order for more bands was placed the following Monday!”
Robbie, Darcie’s Dad
We are all so impressed with Darcie’s kindness, generosity and positive spirit, and are wishing her all the best for the following 10 months as she undergoes treatment.
