Having studied accountancy at Glasgow University, Jonathan joined KPMG and qualified as a chartered accountant in 1987. Following a consultancy assignment within the NHS, he joined Yorkhill NHS Trust in 1994, where he was employed as Deputy Director of Finance.
During this time his responsibilities included the charitable funds held within the Trust, and he led the management team which helped establish Glasgow Children's Hospital Charity.
He has sat on the Board of Directors of the charity and held the office of Treasurer since the charity’s inception in 2001.
In July 2006, he became Head of Finance within Renfrewshire Community Health Partnerships and, following the Public Bodies (Joint Working) (Scotland) Act 2014 and the integration of the NHS and Social Work services, became Head of Finance of Glasgow City Health & Social Care partnership in 2015.
